Why am I not sending video?

Make sure the receiver has installed the latest version of Skype for Windows. The Samsung C series model TV's have only the h.264 codec and only Skype for Windows 4.2 or later has this codec.

Skype's High Quality Video (640 x 480) requires an Internet connection with a minimum upload speed of 384 Kbps. Where there is insufficient network upload speed the Skype program will have difficultly sending and receiving video.

Also note that there is some network negotiation between Skype program occurring when you start a Skype video call. The two hardware units involved in the call will check the capability of each other, if TV reports that it can only send video in h.264, and if the PC says it can only do VP7 (as is the case for Skype versions earlier than 4.2), then there is no common way method of video communication. In this scenario, the video stream will not be transmitted.

Other factors influencing video transmission include the processor speed of the receiving PC and the RAM available. Try reducing the number of programs open on the receiving PC, especially if it has >4GB RAM installed.

Skype also has a "bandwidth management" feature. Skype is constantly monitoring the network connection; should conditions degrade (due to conditions beyond Skype's control), the video call resolution may drop back to a lower (320 x 240 or 160 x 120). But if network conditions improve again, Skype's bandwidth management will automatically restore to the best possible resolution.

See Call Quality Guide for suggestions to resolve any call issues.

Can I use the Samsung webcam for a call to a Mac computer?

At this point the Skype for Mac program does not support h.264 codec. Until Skype releases a new version of Skype for Mac that supports h.264 codec calls with a Mac will not display video.

TROUBLESHOOTING

  • Please ensure both parties are using the latest version of Skype. See Help — Check for Updates.
  • Use Skype testing tools to test settings before attempting to make a call. See Tools -Option — Audio Settings and Video Settings for testing.
  • Please ensure the dust cover that the camera was shipped with has been removed.
  • Please realize that in addition to bandwidth requirements, programs running in the background on can raise CPU usage of the receiver causing limited video reception.
  • See Skype User Guides for full Skype usage explanations.
